This is the Ecuador adventure you didn’t know you needed.

There are trips where you relax.

And then there are trips where you find yourself standing on the equator one day, rafting through rapids the next, swinging over a cliff, hiking around a volcanic crater and wondering exactly when your holiday became an extreme sport. But we love it that way.

Welcome to Ecuador.

For a relatively compact country, Ecuador packs a punch with an almost ridiculous amount of adventure. The country’s geography moves from the Andes to the Amazon, Pacific Coast and Galápagos, creating opportunities for everything from mountaineering and rafting to surfing, canyoning and diving.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Ecuador beyond traditional sightseeing, start with these experiences.

1. Stand in Two Hemispheres at Mitad del Mundo

You can’t travel to the country named after the equator and not have your equator moment.

Head outside Quito to Mitad del Mundo, where the obligatory photo involves standing with one foot on either side of the equatorial line.

I took it one step further and had a tug-of-war with friends standing on opposite sides.

Who won?

We don’t need to discuss that.

It’s touristy, yes. It’s also one of those experiences you can only really have here.

→ Book a Mitad del Mundo tour from Quito

2. Hike Around Cotopaxi Volcano

Ecuador’s Andes are home to more than 70 volcanoes and mountains along the country’s famous Avenue of the Volcanoes.

And Cotopaxi is one of the stars.

You don’t need to attempt a summit to experience it. Explore Cotopaxi National Park, hike through its dramatic high-altitude landscape and take in views of that almost suspiciously perfect volcanic cone.

→ Find a Cotopaxi day trip from Quito

3. See the Ridiculously Blue Quilotoa Crater Lake

If you’re already exploring the Andes, add Quilotoa.

The brilliant blue-green lake sits inside a volcanic crater and is one of those landscapes that makes you stop talking for a second.

Hike along the crater rim, descend towards the lake or tackle part of the wider Quilotoa Loop.

Just remember: you’re at altitude. This is not the day to discover you’ve been dramatically overestimating your cardio.

4. Go to Baños — Ecuador’s Adventure Capital

Now we need to talk about Baños de Agua Santa.

If you like your holidays with a little adrenaline, do not skip this town.

About 180 kilometres from Quito, Baños sits near Tungurahua volcano and is known for thermal waters, waterfalls and outdoor adventure. Ecuador’s tourism authority specifically recommends rafting, canyoning, rock climbing, horseback riding and hiking here.

This could easily be a two- or three-day stop.

→ Find hotels in Baños
→ Book adventure experiences in Baños

5. Go White-Water Rafting in Baños

This was made for the traveler who looks at a rushing river and thinks:

Yes. I would like to be thrown around in that.

Baños is one of Ecuador’s major bases for white-water rafting, with trips combining rapids, jungle-like scenery and plenty of adrenaline.

Go with a certified operator, listen to your guide and prepare to get very, very wet. Ecuador’s tourism authority specifically recommends using certified tour operators for adventure activities around Baños.

→ Book white-water rafting in Baños

6. Jump Off a Bridge — Yes, Really

If rafting isn’t enough adrenaline for one holiday, Baños is also known for bridge jumping, often marketed locally as puenting or bungee-style jumping.

This is where I insert the disclaimer:

Adventure is fun. Gravity remains undefeated.

Choose a reputable operator, check the activity setup carefully and don’t feel pressured to jump simply because everyone else is doing it.

But if throwing yourself into open space while attached to a rope happens to be on your bucket list?

Baños understood the assignment.

→ Find Baños adventure tours

7. Go Canyoning Down a Waterfall

Why admire a waterfall when you can rappel down one?

Canyoning involves navigating waterfalls and canyons through combinations of rappelling, climbing, sliding and swimming. Ecuador’s official adventure guidance specifically promotes canyoning across the country for both beginners and experienced adventurers.

Baños is one of the places I’d try it.

Helmet on.

Harness on.

Fear… we’ll deal with that later.

→ Book a canyoning experience in Baños

8. Cycle the Ruta de las Cascadas

For something adventurous without voluntarily jumping off anything, rent a bike and explore the famous Ruta de las Cascadas.

The route takes you past a series of waterfalls through the lush landscape outside Baños.

The star is Pailón del Diablo, one of the area’s best-known waterfalls. Baños’ surrounding area actually contains numerous waterfalls; Ecuador’s tourism authority identifies 16 in the area.

Bike. Stop. Explore. Take photos. Repeat.

9. Swing at the End of the World

You’ve probably already seen this one on Instagram.

At Casa del Árbol, you’ll find the famous Swing at the End of the World, overlooking the mountainous landscape around Baños and Tungurahua.

Is it dramatic?

Yes.

Is that precisely why we’re going?

Also yes.

The site is one of the experiences specifically highlighted by Ecuador’s tourism authority for visitors to Baños.

10. Zip-Line Above the Landscape

Still haven’t had enough?

Try canopy/zip-lining.

Baños’ adventure parks offer activities including zip lines, Tibetan bridges, rock climbing and via ferrata routes.

At this point, Baños starts feeling less like a town and more like nature built its own theme park.

11. Reward Yourself With a Thermal Bath

After rafting, cycling, hiking and questioning your life choices from the edge of a bridge, there is only one reasonable next activity:

Get in the hot water.

Baños literally means “baths,” and the area is known for its naturally heated thermal waters associated with the volcanic landscape.

Adventure hard.

Recover harder.

12. Go Into the Amazon by Canoe

Then change worlds completely.

Ecuador’s Amazon offers canoe journeys, rainforest hiking and wildlife experiences among one of the country’s most biodiverse landscapes.

Consider Tena as an accessible adventure base or go deeper with a stay at an Amazon lodge.

→ Find Ecuador Amazon lodges
→ Book an Amazon adventure tour

Now which Ecuador adventure would you try first?

From chasing waterfalls in Banos, to hiking volcanoes, exploring the Amazon and standing on the equator, the best things to do in Ecuador are anything but ordinary! Whether you’re building an Ecuador adventure bucket list or planning your first trip, come ready to explore, push past your fears and collect some unforgettable stories!
