Before I visited Jamaica, I heard every opinion possible.
Some people made it sound like paradise. Others made it sound terrifying. And honestly? The internet can sometimes make destinations feel far scarier than they actually are.
But after spending time in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, I can genuinely say this:
Jamaica was one of the most vibrant, fun, social, and enjoyable Caribbean trips I’ve taken.
And as someone who pays close attention to safety while traveling — especially as a woman — I never felt like I couldn’t enjoy myself.
Was I careless? Absolutely not.
Was I paranoid the entire trip? Also no.
Like most destinations, Jamaica rewards travelers who use common sense, stay aware, and plan intentionally.
My First Impression of Jamaica
The energy hits you immediately.
Music playing. Warm air. Friendly people. Vacation mode fully activated before you even leave the airport.
I stayed in Montego Bay at Riu Montego Bay, which made the trip feel very easy and beginner-friendly.
One thing I immediately appreciated was how tourism-oriented many areas felt. Excursions were organized, resorts were active and social, and there were constantly other travelers around.
For first-time visitors, especially solo female travelers or girls groups, Montego Bay is honestly a great place to start.
Did I Feel Safe In Montego Bay?
Overall? Yes.
Especially within:
- resort areas
- organized excursions
- tourist-friendly zones
- restaurants and nightlife areas
The atmosphere felt lively and social rather than isolating.
I also loved how easy it was to meet people naturally — whether during excursions, karaoke nights, or resort activities.

Ocho Rios Felt Surprisingly Easy To Navigate
Ocho Rios ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip.
The excursions were well organized, the guides were helpful, and the tourist areas felt very active.
Even as someone who doesn’t swim well, I still:

- jumped into Blue Hole
- tried bamboo rafting
And those experiences became some of my favorite memories from Jamaica.

The Hybrid Driving Situation
Seeing both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive cars genuinely confused me for at least 48 hours.
But somehow it works.
Final Thoughts
Jamaica felt joyful.
Not perfect. Not unrealistically polished. But vibrant, exciting, welcoming, and incredibly memorable.
Would I recommend it for solo female travelers?
Yes — especially with thoughtful planning.
Would I go back?
Absolutely.
