Jamaica Was Not What I Expected

And I mean that in the BEST way possible. Let me share some things to know before visiting Jamaica.

Now this was my first time in Jamaica. Before visiting Jamaica, I expected beaches, resorts, reggae music.

What I didn’t expect was how vibrant, social, adventurous, and emotionally fun the entire experience would feel. Definitely didn’t expect to have my first scuba diving experience here. Jamaica really felt like a city of firsts for me.

1. Everyone Is Outside

Jamaica has this lively energy where it feels like life is constantly happening around you.

Music playing, People laughing, Restaurants active, Nightlife flowing.

The vibes are genuinely unmatched.

2. The Driving Situation Confused Me Immediately

Seeing both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive vehicles felt like my brain buffering in real time. But somehow, everyone navigates it perfectly. if you’re visiting Jamaica for the first time and plan to rent a car, this is something to pay attention to in advance so you don’t get shocked.

3. The Water Excursions Were WAY More Fun Than Expected

Dunn’s River Falls and Blue Hole genuinely became some of my favorite travel experiences ever. Especially because I don’t even swim confidently. At Dunn’s river, you’re literally climbing your way through cascading waterfalls, while Blue Hole gave me the kind of cliff-jumper adventure I always fail to talk myself out of. If you’re planning your first trip to Jamaica, I’d put both in the itinerary!

4. Jamaican Rum Is Dangerous (Respectfully)

Respectfully so! If you’re a light weight or not a huge alcohol drinker like me, you’d notice the kick in their liquor. However, I found it a thing of incredible pride to be show their locally sourced rum! I’d definitely recommend getting a few bottle to take back home with you.

5. Karaoke Nights At Resorts Go Platinum Certified

People arrive READY. At the resort, there were nights where we were encouraged to take the stage and sing our hearts out. The energy I felt watching people take the stage with contagious joy as we got ready to sing along to some Bob Marley.

No stage fright. No hesitation. Just vibes.

6. Cannabis Culture Is Very Open

Cannabis culture is highly visible throughout many tourist areas in Jamaica and tied closely to local culture and tourism.

Always remain respectful of laws and regulations while traveling internationally.

7. Jamaica Made Me Want To Return Immediately

I stayed at Montego Bay and had the best time. But I can’t wait to retuen and visit Negril and Kingston

Because one trip honestly wasn’t enough.

Final Thoughts

Jamaica felt joyful.

And sometimes that’s exactly the kind of destination you need.

Not performative luxury.
Not overplanned tourism.
Just beautiful moments, warm people, adventure, music, and memories that stay with you long after the trip ends.
